The IITB Biopharma Summit 2023 was held at VMCC on the 23rd and 24th of November. It was sponsored by the Institution of Eminence Cell, IITB Research Park, and Cytiva India. The summit saw a turnaround of 235 total attendees (industry, academics, students, startups) over two days of the event.
Profs. Sudarshan and Mahesh Tirumkudulu gave the introductory comments to kick off the session. The DBT Secretary, Dr. Rajesh Gokhale, outlined the government's efforts to advance biotechnology and biopharmaceutical development. Experts from academia and businesses presented technical seminars on cutting-edge developments in biologics production, bioprocessing, and creative ways to expedite the development of next-generation vaccines. Dr Hari Pujar and Prof. George Church delivered enlightening lectures on the latest developments in synthetic biology, gene therapy, and related fields. A vibrant exchange of opinions and experiences on bridging the gap between research and real-world patient impact occurred during the lively panel discussion with physicians.
The second day of the summit was devoted to advanced biomanufacturing technologies for biologics, cell and gene therapies, and the use of AI/ML in biopharma. The application of multi-omics and state-of-the-art process analytical tools to CHO cell engineering and upstream process intensification was highlighted. Several deep tech investors also attended the event. They shared their thoughts on funding early-stage biopharma startups and the importance of connecting biopharma researchers with early-stage investors and startup incubators to speed up the conversion of cutting-edge discoveries into accessible medical treatments. The valedictory ceremony and awards for the top poster presentations marked the conclusion of the conference.
The conference successfully showcased the promise of novel treatments and pharmacological modalities and the revolutionary potential of emerging technologies such as metabolic modeling, AI/ML, and multi-omics in biopharma. Our sincere gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of this conference.
