About WRCB

Wadhwani Research Centre for Bioengineering (WRCB) was established in 2014 with a generous philanthropic donation from Dr Romesh Wadhwani. It is an inter-departmental virtual centre of IIT Bombay. WRCB supports technology translation and commercialization in the four core focus areas of Diagnostics, Therapeutics, MedTech and Synthetic Biology. Over 60 faculty members from the different departments of the institute have been supported by the centre.

The institute has forged alliances with the key players in the bioengineering ecosystem including industry, clinicians, incubators and venture capital companies that fund technology innovation. The centre has developed a unique Industry Research Partnership Program (IRPP) to foster industry-academia collaboration. The centre has recently started an External Fundraising Support (EFS) service to help PIs raise follow-on funding for their WRCB-supported projects. We also provide Commercialization Support Service (CSS) where we provide PIs with technologies at an advanced stage (TRL 5 and above) with funding support, consultations with domain experts, and business development services. With its multiple initiatives, WRCB aims to strengthen the vibrant bioengineering ecosystem in IIT Bombay.

The foundation boosts economic development by supporting job creation, entrepreneurship, small business growth, skill development and innovation. Dr Wadhwani believes that innovative research in bioengineering is crucial to improving the wellness and public health in India and other emerging economies. This is possible only through breakthroughs that are low-cost, affordable, and accessible to even the remotest villages such that these innovations can improve the life of a commoner. It is this vision of Dr Wadhwani that led to the creation of the Wadhwani Research Centre for Bioengineering (WRCB) at IIT Bombay.
